The St. Francis boys' tennis team came away with a 13-5 Mission League victory over Sierra Canyon at Flint Canyon Tennis Club on April 7, securing the season sweep over Trailblazers.
The Golden Knights won six out of nine singles sets spearheaded by No. 2 player Armen Balikyan-Bekian who won by scores of 6-3, 6-4 and 6-2. The undefeated junior was hyped after his performance. He gave credit to his mentality resetting before every match, crediting his coach and mother for the piece of advice.
"It's just how can you play to make yourself win," Balikyan-Bekian said. "It's not how good the other opponent is and that's kind of the key to getting your first win."
With St. Francis losing their top singles player due injury before the match, Golden Knights coach Jong-Min Lee knew the rest of the team had to step up and was proud to see his singles compete. He was also happy about his doubles teams, particularly his No. 3 duo of junior Logan King and freshman Mason Oakland who finished the day unbeaten. The pair swept their side, 6-1, 6-2 and 6-4.Â
"After that first hit, I was like 'if we can do that, we can really put anything together,' and it helped knowing it," said King.
The St. Francis coach is excited to see what his team will do come playoff time.
"We have a young team with a lot of incoming freshman, so those kids will be getting a lot of good experience," he said. "And then comes playoff time where the big boys get to play. I'm sure the boys will get a good experience out of it."
St. Francis also picked up singles wins from No. 1Â David Bagdasarian (6-4) and No. 3 George Hollingsworth (6-4, 6-2). The Golden Knights also secured two sets of wins from two doubles teams in No. 1 pair Alex Ghazarian and Preston Kim (6-2, 6-1) and No. 2 duo Lucas Silva and Adrien Ravon (6-4, 6-4).
